Our History


The Beginning: 1940’s – 1960’s

1947: Carl M. Freeman Associates, Inc. established in Montgomery County, Maryland in response to the post-war housing shortage in the Washington, DC area
1948: The company introduced the “California Cottage” to the East Coast
1953: Early Carl M. Freeman innovations such as apartment balconies, garden apartments and Americana communities become widely mimicked across the country.
1957: Mr. Freeman helps establish Suburban Maryland Home Builders Association to standardized professional practices in the building industry and serves as the organization's first President.
1960: The Carl M. Freeman Foundation was established by Mr. and Mrs. Freeman
1962: Americana Glenmont receives Award for Best Apartment Site Planning from National Park and Planning Commission
1963: Company receives “Subdivision of the year Award” from Montgomery County Council for protection of trees and terrain
1963: Northern Virginia Builders Association Award of Merit for excellence in construction of garden apartments with attention to architecture, workmanship, site planning and landscaping
1963: Americana Park names largest apartment community in Baltimore City history
1964: House & Home magazine lists Carl M. Freeman Associates as one of nation's top 12 builders
1967: Cabin John Mall and Shopping Center groundbreaking begins in Potomac, Maryland
1968: In response to community need, the company builds its first community shopping center Cabin John Mall in Potomac, Maryland
1969: Development of Sea Colony, the beautiful beach and tennis community begins in Bethany Beach, Delaware


40's - 60's70's - 90's2000 - Present
